StarTran Gives Final Offer

Representatives from StarTran and ATU Local 1091 held contract negotiation talks with a federal mediator on July 24.

After much work, the StarTran negotiating team gave a final offer, which includes pay raises, a signing bonus, and a comprehensive healthcare plan.

The offer supports StarTran’s goal to be an employer of choice and a model transportation operator by providing both competitive wages and benefits package, as well as programs that assist employees with balancing work and life demands.

ATU Local 1091representatives agreed to take the proposal to their membership for a vote August 20.

Here’s some facts about StarTran wages

Bus Operators

  • Based on the top hourly rate, StarTran bus operators are the highest paid in Texas and among the highest in the nation. This will still be true based on StarTran’s contract proposal.
  • Currently a starting StarTran bus operator makes $11.81 per hour ($24,654.80 per year), and the top rate is $19.69 per hour ($40,955.2 per year).
  • Average base salary of a StarTran fixed route bus or paratransit van operator is $18.23 per hour ($37,918.40 per year).
  • Top 20 annual salaries with overtime for bus operators ranged between $61,976 and $89,104 for 2007.

Mechanics

  • Top hourly mechanic pay is highest in Texas for transit system mechanics. This will still be true based on StarTran’s contract proposal.
  • Currently a starting StarTran mechanic makes $21.78 per hour ($45,302.4 per year), and the top rate is $23.97 per hour ($49,857.60 per year)
  • Average base salary of a StarTran mechanic is $23.33 per hour ($48,529.35 per year).
  • Top 20 annual salaries with overtime for mechanics ranged between $67,897 and $91,149.

Austin Area Comparisons

  • First year AISD teacher (w/BA degree) makes $39,790 per year.
  • Starting AISD bus operator makes $12.00/hour (24,960/year). Top wage is $13.59/hour ($28,267.20/year).
  • Median wage for all occupations in Austin Metro Area: $14.32/hour ($29,786/year)
  • Entry wage in Austin Metro Area: $8.36/hour ($17,389/year)
